Trees of the Shenandoah Valley: Best trees to plant near the house, What Grows Here, and What to Plant Where

The Shenandoah Valley grows tougher trees than its soil has any business supporting. We sit in USDA hardiness zones 6b and 7a, fairly consistent up and down the Valley with no real microclimate pockets to plan around, on ground that is mostly red clay and limestone and not especially rich.

What makes up for it is the seasons. The Valley gets four real ones, a true spring, summer, and fall of roughly three months each, and the species that have settled here are adapted to that rhythm and to everything it throws at them: drought stretches, hard summer thunderstorms instead of steady rain, and swings from 100 degrees in July to 10 below in January. The trees that survive that are resilient by definition. 


Here is what actually grows here, what is struggling right now, and where to put a new tree so you are not regretting it in thirty years.


The one thing missing from Valley soil

Most tree removals in the Shenandoah Valley cost $1,500 to $4,500 per tree. Really large trees run $6,000 to $10,000, a job that needs a crane adds $2,000 to $3,000 on top, and stump grinding is a separate line item starting at $350. Estimates are free.


That is the honest range, and it is wide for a reason. The reason is not the one most people expect.


What actually grows in the Shenandoah Valley 

Oaks, and the problem they are facing right now 

Oaks dominate here: northern and southern red oaks, chestnut oaks, and American white oaks. They are also, this year, most of what we are taking down. 


The cause is hypoxylon canker, a fungal infection of hardwoods that lives latently inside healthy trees and only turns destructive once the tree is stressed. Red oaks are more susceptible than white oaks. It shows first as crown thinning and branch dieback, then as a tan or reddish brown powdery mat under lifting bark that hardens and turns black like tar. Once it reaches that stage there is no cure, and the tree comes down.

The canker is the second problem, not the first

It takes hold in oaks that drought, compaction, or injury already weakened. Prune oaks in the dormant window, January through March, keep the soil under them healthy, and you are addressing the actual vulnerability.

Maples and cherries

Both common here, and both slightly more forgiving on timing than the oaks. Most hardwoods want the January to March dormant window, but some maples and cherries can be pruned in summer without the same risk. That is a species by species call rather than a blanket rule, so ask before cutting.


Ash, and what is left of it

Emerald ash borer is past its peak in this area, and not for a good reason. It is past its peak largely because so much of the ash is already gone. Green ash was pushed to the brink of extinction nationally.


If you still have a healthy ash, that is worth knowing about. The pest is treatable and can be killed in a specific tree when it is caught in time, which makes a surviving ash one of the few trees around here genuinely worth a protective treatment plan rather than a wait and see.


Walnut, hickory, and the rest of the hardwoods

Walnut counts as a hardwood for pruning purposes and belongs in the same dormant window as the oaks, as does hickory. Nut trees generally follow hardwood timing.


Dogwoods and magnolias

The ornamentals people care most about, and a large share of the pruning we do. Both fall in roughly the same dormant window as the hardwoods. Ornamental pruning is more meticulous work than it looks, closer to a haircut than to structural pruning, and it is easy to take too much.


Fruit trees

Fruit trees also want the dormant window, but they come with a decision the other species do not. Pruning a fruit tree is entirely scope driven: do you want longevity, or do you want more fruit?

More fruit

Topping, the way commercial orchards do it. Fruit grows low and pickable, and the tree's life is shorter.

Commercial orchards top their trees. Topping is bad for a tree and shortens its life, but it forces fruit to grow low where it can be picked. Orchards harvest for five or six years and then replace the tree, and that math works for them.

The native tree almost nobody plants: the pawpaw

If more people in this Valley planted one thing, it should be pawpaws.


The pawpaw is the only true native Appalachian fruit tree. It is unique to this region, it has been here far longer than any of us, and most people who live here have never knowingly seen one. That is the part worth sitting with, because it points at something larger: a great deal of what grows in Appalachia is naturalized rather than native, brought over centuries ago and now so established that we assume it belongs.


Pawpaws are understory trees, which means they tolerate the partial shade that defeats most fruit trees, and they are well suited to exactly the conditions this Valley offers. They are also one of the few things you can plant here that genuinely belongs here.

Where to plant, and how far from the house

The most common planting mistake we see is not the species. It is the location, and it is almost always the same species in the wrong place: fast growing conifers.


Fast growing conifers belong on borders and property lines, away from structures, away from power lines, and away from anything that will eventually cap their growth. An eastern white pine grows two to three feet a year and reaches 60 to 90 feet within three decades. Plant one beside the house the year you move in and you will be dealing with it by the time you are 55.


Plant for the mature size, not the nursery size.

A tree that looks proportionate to your house today is telling you nothing about whether it will be proportionate in twenty five years. Look up the mature height and canopy spread of anything you are about to put in the ground, and give it that much room from the structure, the power line, and the septic field.

New developments and the edge row problem

Two patterns show up constantly in newer neighborhoods.

1 · Overplanting

Landscapers install densely so the property looks finished within two years, and the plantings then fail from crowding once they start competing for the same light, water, and root space.

2 · The leftover edge row

Builders frequently leave a single standing row of trees between lots for privacy. The problem is that trees take wind together, as a forest. Interior trees are sheltered by the ones around them and never develop for exposure. Strip away everything except one row, and that row absorbs the full force of every storm it used to share.


Wind snap and blowdown risk climb dramatically, on trees that were never built for it. The honest recommendation is often the unwelcome one: remove the row and plant properly for the site you actually have.


Mature neighborhoods: leave the big limbs alone

Different setting, different rule. On a mature tree, avoid pruning big limbs. Full stop.


Large wounds on old trees are how you lose them. An old tree compartmentalizes slowly and has far less capacity to seal a major cut than a young one does. Fungal disease pressure in this Valley peaks in August, so a fresh cut in late summer is an open door at the worst possible moment. If a large cut genuinely has to happen, push it to winter and give the tree its best chance to recover.


Planting where a tree came out

Wait at least a year, preferably two.


The old root system needs time to break down in place. As it does, it returns its mineral and nutritional content to the soil, which is the same reason we leave stump grindings in place by default rather than hauling them off. Planting into that spot too early puts a new tree into ground that is still busy decomposing the last one.


What Valley weather does to trees

Three things do most of the damage here.

Ice

A modest ice accumulation on a mature canopy adds thousands of pounds of load to limbs that were never engineered for it. Ice storms break more trees in this Valley than wind does.

Saturated soil plus wind

The classic uprooting recipe, and it does not take a hurricane. Once the ground is soft, a root system that was never well anchored simply lets go. It is why so many failures happen in ordinary storms that follow a wet week.

Drought followed by everything else

Our rain arrives as hard summer thunderstorms rather than as steady soaking, so trees swing between too little water and too much. That stress is what opens the door to the canker, the borers, and the rest of it.
